Raisha, daughter of a Senegalese sub-chief, is captured and sold into slavery to a Dutch family on the island of St. John. Her fiancee and later husband becomes the leader of a group of runaway slaves who rebel, and Raisha, known as Angelica by the family she serves, escapes in time to witness their mass suicide rather than be recaptured as slaves.
